Hero's Tools of the Trade

Need some tips?

Welcome, intrepid adventurer! By now, you've sculpted your Hero into a being of legend, poised to take on whatever challenges the Hero Master (HM) devises. But there's more to this journey than stats and rolls. Your Hero is part of a greater narrative, one where camaraderie, intent, and mutual respect are just as critical as prowess. Here, we'll outline the unspoken rules, the tips, and the etiquette that make the game — and the story — an enjoyable experience for all.

What is "Good"?

Every Hero defines their own sense of "good." For one, it might mean aiding those in distress; for another, it could justify theft to fund a noble cause. A Hero may believe sharing dangerous secrets with the masses is "good," while others might balk at such recklessness. Morality is subjective, and a Hero's sense of right often clashes — or aligns — with the world around them. Ask yourself often: Does my Hero consider this good?

Declare Intent

Before acting, declare your Hero's intent clearly. Don't just roll and announce a number; state what you're trying to achieve. For instance, "I punch the merchant in the nose" sets the scene for your action and its consequences, allowing everyone to react or prepare. Communication ensures clarity and avoids confusion.

Don't Hog the Spotlight

Adventuring is thrilling, and it's easy to dominate the conversation or take the lion's share of the action. Remember, the story belongs to everyone.

Let your fellow Heroes shine; their moments are just as important as yours. A good Hero knows when to step back and share the glory.

PRM — Politics, Religion, and Money

Nothing derails a session faster than real-world disagreements about Politics, Religion, or Money (PRM). While in-game PRM can add drama and depth to the story, keep real-world PRM out of the session. Everyone's here to escape reality, not debate it.

White Rabbiting

Be punctual. Show up on time, ready to play, with your character sheet and materials in hand. Missing sessions — or worse, arriving unprepared — disrupts the flow of the story and tests the patience of your group. If you know you can't make it, let everyone know well in advance, not minutes before the session starts. A Hero who is always absent can't form bonds with the group.

Heroically Driven

Every Hero needs a long-term goal. Whether it's amassing treasure, building a library of stolen doorknobs, or saving a kingdom, a clear objective gives your character purpose. Think beyond the immediate adventure — what drives your Hero? What do they strive to achieve?

Sharing is Caring

Adventuring often yields grand treasures and valuable artifacts. Share the spoils fairly among the group. Hoarding gold or stealing from fellow Heroes breeds resentment. Remember, the real treasure is the fun you're all having together.

Anyone Have the Time?

Timekeeping is essential. In-game time governs crafting, exploration, and even combat. Designate a Time Keeper to track these moments, ensuring the

game flows smoothly. Rotate this responsibility each session to keep things fair. Find a system that works for your group and stick to it.

Pygmy Cannibals from Space

Keep your Hero grounded in the game's tone and world. While creativity is encouraged, ensure your character fits the narrative and doesn't offend or alienate others at the table. Similarly, HMs should strive to create a world where everyone feels comfortable and engaged. Respect each other's boundaries — fun is the ultimate goal.
